  2. ON the 20th anniversary of Veer-Zaara, actor Divya Dutta reminisced about her experience working with the late Yash Chopra, calling him her “most favourite filmmaker.” Dutta, who portrayed Shabbo in the film, said the opportunity to work with Chopra came seven years after she entered the industry, having initially been introduced through a talent hunt where Chopra served as a judge. I used to imagine he would say ‘You are so good, I will take you in my next film,’ but no such thing happened.” She finally worked with Chopra in Veer-Zaara, a film she remembers fondly as a dream realised. “To be on the sets of Yash Chopra was a dream come true. 4. PANKAJ ADVANI edged closer to his 28th world title, securing a spot in the final of the IBSF World Billiards Championship (150-up format) with a 4–2 win over fellow Indian Sourav Kothari in Doha on Friday. The match, an all-Indian affair, showcased high-quality billiards as Advani, the 27-time world champion, made a strong start to clinch the opening frame in the semifinal. Kothari responded by taking the second frame to level the score. However, Advani shifted into top gear and showcased his unmatched precision and tactical brilliance to claim the next two frames and establish a 3–1 lead. 5. FORMER captain Ricky Ponting reckons Australia will clinch the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3–1 against India as the visitors will find taking 20 wickets in a Test as their “biggest challenge” in absence of Mohammed Shami. Australia are keen on ending their barren run in the Border-Gavaskar with India winning each of the four series since 2014–15, including the historic triumphs Down Under in 2018–19 and 2020–21. However, with India suffering the historic low of a first-ever whitewash by 0–3 against New Zealand, Ponting believes the hosts have a better chance of defeating India now. “Probably more so now (than before),” Ponting said about Australia’s chances on the ICC Review Show. Shami has been out of action since last November due to injuries and Ponting believes his absence leaves a big hole in India’s bowling attack comprising Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna and the uncapped Harshit Rana. 6. THE Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has submitted a ‘Letter of Intent’, expressing the country’s desire to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, to the International Olympic Committee’s Future Host Commission, taking the first concrete step in an ambitious plan. The letter was submitted on October 1, according to a source in the sports ministry. “This monumental opportunity could bring substantial benefits, fostering economic growth, social progress, and youth empowerment across the country,” the source added. Prime minister Narendra Modi had first talked about his government’s aspiration to host the 2036 Olympics last year. A decision on the host will not be taken before the IOC elections next year and India will also have to face competition from several other nations like Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey, who are positioning themselves as strong contenders to host the sporting spectacle. India’s plan has been backed by current IOC head Thomas Bach. The last time India hosted an international multi-sport extravaganza was the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. 15. BRITISH-INDIAN filmmaker Sandhya Suri says her debut feature “Santosh”, which is the UK’s official entry to the Oscars, is a deeply political film but she was careful that the story, woven around two female cops, doesn’t become “didactic”. She and her senior inspector (Sunita Rajwar) are soon sucked into a high-profile investigation into the rape and murder of a Dalit teenager. “My film is deeply political about the role of women and where we are,” Suri told PTI in an interview, admitting that she often gets lost for words to talk about the movie in a “bigger way” because she funnelled everything she felt about the subject into her movie. Suri said she knew from the beginning that her script was strong and hoped that as a director she makes the film “as good as the script”.
