Fritz beats Goffin, qualifies for Shanghai Masters semi-finals
World number seven Taylor Fritz would beat the former world number seven David Goffin in straight sets on Friday.
FIRST SET
Fritz would take an early lead after getting a break in Goffin’s first service game. The Belgian player failed to get enough elevation on his forehand as the ball ended up in the net to close the game.
Goffin would get a break back in the fifth game, after a fantastic rally that showed off the Belgian number one’s backhand. Fritz ended the rally in similar fashion to the first break of the match, with the ball in the net.
The Belgian player would fail to capitalise, as the world number seven got another break in the very next game. Goffin’s backhand would land just beyond the baseline.
The two would both win their next service games, making the score five games to three in favour of the American. It was another error from Goffin that settled the set, sending the ball out of bounds once again.
SECOND SET
Fritz would begin the second set in similar fashion, getting an early break in the third game as he placed a forehand right next to the side-line.
The American would get a pair of match points in the ninth game, but Goffin did well to defend. In the first, the Belgian sent the world number 7 all over the court, positioning himself at the net perfectly in the process to deliver a winner of a volley. Goffin would do the same to stop the second, once again closing in on the net before hitting a volley to force a deuce.
Fritz would get another match point after taking the advantage, but once again, Goffin refused to give in, ending a fantastic rally with a backhand that sent the ball right along the side-line and past the American.
However, Goffin would eventually fall to the world number seven in the next game. After Fritz took a 40 to 15 lead, Goffin once again hit the ball with just a little too much on it, as it landed outside court boundaries.
Fritz will face either Novak Djokovic or Jakub Mensik on Saturday.
