Messi wins 46th trophy as Inter Miami beat Columbus Crew
Lionel Messi extended his record for the most trophies won by any men’s soccer player in history with his 46th, after Inter Miami beat the Columbus Crew 3-2.
Inter Miami won the Supporters Shield, an award given annually to the team with the best regular season record, after their dominant performance against Columbus.
Columbus looked to have taken an early lead in the seventh minute of the match as Cucho Hernandez found himself inside the box with the ball, which he sent over the goalkeeper into the top of the net. However, it was ruled offside.
Then it was Miami who seemed to strike first, after a beautifully placed cross by Messi ricocheted off a Columbus defender and into the net. However, this too was deemed to be offside, controversially so.
It was right at the end of the half when Miami broke the stand still. Messi receved a long lob and used his incredible control to dribble past one defender while fighting off another, until he finally beat the keeper and rolled the ball into the Columbus net.
The Argentine phenom wasn’t done yet and neither was the half. Five minutes of stoppage time was more than enough for him to double the lead with a stunner of a free kick. Messi looped the strike around the defensive wall to score his second goal of the game.
Columbus was down, but not ready to concede that they were out, reducing Miami’s lead less than thirty seconds into the second half. Jordi Alba tried to clear the ball from his teams side as Columbus were mounting a quick attack, but The Herons’ defender hit it straight into Mohamed Farsi. The ball ricocheted off the Columbus right-back and landed perfectly for Diego Rossi, who struck it into Miami net with ease.
The comeback was on, but not for long as Miami extended their lead just two minutes later. Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte caught a long lob into his box that was meant for Luis Suarez before being knocked over by his own defender. The loose ball was headed into the undefended net by Suarez.
Ten minutes later Columbus would earn a penalty after the ball caught the arm of Miami’s Noah Allen in the box. Cucho would convert the opportunity, to reduce Miami’s lead to one in the 60th minute.
However, the side wouldn’t be able to score again, losing to Inter Miami three to two. The Herons record for the regular season stands at 20 wins and eight losses.
