The Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) recently convened the second edition of its Human Resources Forum, focusing on workforce upskilling and reskilling. Held on Microsoft Teams, the forum, titled ‘Workforce Upskilling & Reskilling’, brought together His Excellency Abdulla Ali Bin Zayed Al Falasi, Director-General of DGHR, along with department directors, section heads, and HR specialists from the Dubai Government.

The forum aimed to equip Dubai Government's managers and HR professionals with essential skills to adapt to rapid technological advancements, especially in artificial intelligence (AI). It highlighted emerging trends poised to impact the future workforce and emphasized the importance of staying abreast of these changes.

H.E. Abdulla Ali Bin Zayed Al Falasi emphasized the forum's role in aligning with Dubai's strategic vision to harness AI effectively. "The second edition of the Human Resources Forum underscores DGHR’s dedication to enhancing workforce capabilities amidst rapid technological developments. This initiative reflects our leadership’s vision to position Dubai as a global leader in AI integration across government institutions. Our focus remains on upskilling and reskilling to drive sustainable growth and maintain our competitive edge," said Al Falasi.

He continued, “Our commitment to empowering our national workforce aligns with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision to make Dubai the smartest city worldwide, enhancing quality of life and global competitiveness.”

Forum Highlights

The forum featured a presentation by H.E. Dr. Saeed Aldhaheri, Director of the Centre for Futures Studies at the University of Dubai. His talk, titled ‘Upskilling and Reskilling the Skills of the Workforce in the Era of Artificial Intelligence’, covered global trends affecting future workforce skills, including AI and automation. He stressed the importance of transitioning from job-based hiring to skills-based hiring, emphasizing green economy, sustainability, and leadership roles.

Mariam Al Suwaidi, Senior Vice President of Shared Services at ADNOC Sour Gas, presented ‘ADNOC Academy: The Stages of Developing and Building Workforce Skills’. She shared ADNOC’s innovative strategies for lifelong learning and skill enhancement, illustrating the company’s approach to maintaining competitiveness and supporting sustainable economic growth.

A panel discussion on ‘Skills Needed in the Future’ addressed various aspects, including basic, technical, and AI-specific skills. It underscored the need for a lifelong learning mentality and learning flexibility.

Statistics and Analysis

The forum also reviewed statistics from the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023, noting that 42% of job tasks are expected to be automated by 2027, and 44% of workforce skills will need to evolve in the next five years. The discussion highlighted the necessity of skill enhancement and restructuring to keep pace with the evolving labor market.

Overall, the forum demonstrated DGHR’s commitment to preparing  Dubai for future technological and AI-driven transformations, aligning with the vision of advancing specialized expertise and supporting global technological progress.
