It uses NTP to keep timestamps accurate. When you post something or receive a message, NTP makes sure the time shown is correct. If the clocks are not synced, posts and messages could appear out of order, further added by a Network Emulator supplier. This would confuse users about when things happened. For example, if someone posts a photo and you comment.
