Surgical Procedure for Penile Implants
Penile implant surgery is usually performed under general or regional anesthesia and typically takes 45 minutes to an hour. Here’s an overview of the procedure:
-
Pre-Operative Preparation:
- Before surgery, the patient undergoes thorough medical evaluation, including blood tests, imaging studies, and consultations.
- Antibiotics may be administered to reduce the risk of infection.
-
Surgical Steps:
- A small incision is made at the base of the penis, and space is created to place the implant (either inflatable cylinders or malleable rods).
- If using an inflatable implant, the surgeon places the pump inside the scrotum and the fluid reservoir within the abdomen.
- The incision is then closed with sutures.
- A catheter may be inserted to drain urine temporarily during recovery.
-
Post-Operative Care:
- After surgery, the patient remains in the hospital for observation. Pain and discomfort are managed with prescribed medications.
- The implant is typically not activated for 4-6 weeks to allow healing. Once healed, patients will be instructed on how to use the device.
