September 6 marks Defence Day, which will fall on Friday this year. There is ongoing speculation on social media regarding whether this day will be observed as a public holiday.

September 6 is not designated as a public holiday in Pakistan for the year 2024, according to the notification issued by the Federal Cabinet Division regarding public holidays.

Defence Day was previously observed as a public holiday across the country. The last time this holiday was observed at the federal level was in 1997. However, the federal government discontinued this holiday for the national day in 1998.

However, the government has the authority to declare a public holiday, as demonstrated when it announced a holiday the day before Youm-e-Takbeer on May 28 for the first time.

What is the history of September 6?

September 6 is observed as Defence Day in Pakistan, commemorating the nation’s resolute stand during the 1965 conflict when its armed forces successfully repelled a surprise attack by the numerically superior Indian forces.

An upcoming public holiday in Pakistan will be observed on the 12th of Rabiul Awwal, as Muslims worldwide celebrate the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), known as Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH). However, the exact date of the holiday will be confirmed on Wednesday, September 4, determining whether Eid Milad-un-Nabi will fall on September 16 or September 17.
