Difficult Case and Loss: Reflections from a Criminal Defense Lawyer In my eight years of practicing criminal defense, I recently encountered a particularly challenging case. My client, an 89-year-old man, faced historical charges of sexual abuse dating back 25 years. I secured his release on bond during the hearing. Sadly, his wife contacted me shortly after, expressing concern about his withdrawn and depressed state. I recommended a mental health evaluation, but tragically, the client took his own life. This was my first experience with such a loss, and I felt a deep sense of responsibility to have done more for him and his wife. The outpouring of support from colleagues confirmed I had acted appropriately in the case. However, my greatest concern remains for the client's wife, a kind woman who showed immense strength throughout the process. Being Introduced Incorrectly at Work: How to Address It? As an in-house attorney at a tech company with a small legal team, I've noticed a recurring issue. Despite being with the company the longest, I'm also the least experienced lawyer on the team. A colleague from another department keeps introducing me to external parties via email as a paralegal, not an attorney. While I initially ignored it, the repeated mistakes are becoming bothersome. I'm considering sending a clarifying email, but I don't want to come across as rude. Is there a more tactful way to correct him? Here are some suggestions: Direct but Friendly: A simple email like, "Hi [colleague's name], thanks for introducing me! Just wanted to clarify that my role at the company is Attorney, not paralegal." Humor with a Point: "Hey [colleague's name], appreciate the intro, but I think my legal skills go beyond paralegal work! Just letting you know for future reference." No matter the approach, choose a tone that reflects your professional relationship with the colleague. Legal Win with a Twist! Recently, I represented a landlord in an eviction hearing. My strategy focused on a technicality related to the eviction notice. It was a long shot – the relevant case law in our state dated back to 1908! Neither the judge nor the opposing lawyer seemed familiar with it. To my surprise, the argument worked! The judge dismissed the case, giving my client some much-needed breathing room while the landlord prepares a new one. But here's the unexpected twist: the judge, while reviewing my argument, realized the same legal issue applied to a previous eviction case she had just heard that day. Luckily, both parties were still present, so she was able to recall the case and apply the same dismissal ruling! It's always rewarding to win a case for your client, but helping someone else unintentionally was a truly satisfying bonus.
