BMTC, Ashok Leyland’s OHM To Launch 320 AC Electric Buses For Bengaluru Airport
The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is set to introduce environmentally-friendly AC electric buses on routes connecting Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). A prototype of these buses is expected to arrive in November, marking the first step in replacing the current fleet of Volvo AC buses, known as ‘Vayu Vajra,’ that currently operates on 17 routes.
In partnership with OHM Global Mobility, an Ashok Leyland subsidiary, BMTC will lease 320 AC e-buses under a gross cost contract. Currently, around 140 Volvo buses connect the airport to various parts of Bengaluru, and these will gradually be replaced by the electric buses. The remaining new buses will be deployed on additional routes across the city.
Upon receiving the prototype, BMTC will conduct necessary tests, after which the private operator will begin supplying the remaining buses following official approval. BMTC aims to complete the induction of all buses by March 2025, at an operational cost of ₹65 per kilometer.
Several factors influenced the decision to deploy AC electric buses on airport routes, including high vehicle utilization — with airport route buses covering around 300 kilometers daily, compared to 200 kilometers for city routes. This makes the airport routes ideal for leased buses, ensuring optimal fleet use. Additionally, the upgrade is intended to enhance the travel experience for air passengers.
Currently, BMTC’s fleet includes over 1,000 non-AC electric buses operating within city limits. For over 15 years, BMTC has been providing reliable, affordable transport to the airport, which is located 34 kilometers from the city center. Despite competition from ride-hailing services, the airport bus routes continue to serve between 13,000 and 14,000 passengers daily, including many airport employees.
Passengers have raised concerns about the ageing Vayu Vajra fleet, and the transition to electric buses will address these issues, bringing a refreshed, eco-friendly travel experience. Initially launched exclusively for airport routes, the Vayu Vajra AC buses offered affordable and comfortable travel, with Vajra buses introduced later for city commuting. Both services aim to provide a seamless journey.
The airport routes remain profitable for BMTC, with high demand reflecting the appeal of an economical and environmentally conscious travel option.
Mr. Prakash Hinduja, Chairman of the Hinduja Group, Europe, "At Ashok Leyland, we are committed to driving sustainable innovation in transportation. The introduction of electric buses for BMTC is a significant step toward a greener and more efficient future for Bengaluru's airport routes. We are proud to partner with BMTC to provide environmentally-friendly solutions that not only reduce emissions but also offer a comfortable, modern travel experience for passengers."
