"Deadpool and Wolverine" aims to dominate the box office: all about the duo of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman
The superhero genre has been in decline lately. Superheroes themselves need a savior right now. Fortunately, there are even two of them.
"Deadpool and Wolverine" from Marvel Studios was released in theaters on July 26. Early box office projections suggest this could be the best R-rated film debut ever. A significant part of this success is due to the two main actors, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. They are returning to their famous roles for the first time since 2009, when "X-Men: The Beginning" was released. Wolverine."
Although the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU) is full of content, both fans and newcomers will find something interesting in this film: plot twists, bloody battles and obscene jokes.
Common origins
Both characters, Deadpool and Wolverine, were once not as popular as they are now. In 1974, "Incredible Hulk" screenwriter Len Wein and artist Herb Trimp created Wolverine as the Hulk's opponent. Marvel art director John Romita Sr. designed the first costume of this character, which has evolved over the years.
After a short fight with the Hulk, Wolverine reappeared in the mutant team in Giant-Size X-Men Vol. 1" in 1975, breathing fresh blood into the franchise. Wolverine quickly became the main character of the X-Men and by 1988 had his own comic book series.
Deadpool appeared in comics only in 1990 as a villain in "The New Mutants 98". This character was created by screenwriter Fabian Niciesa and artist Rob Lifeld. However, Lifeld left Marvel to found Image Comics before Deadpool was finally formed. Niciesa and subsequent screenwriters such as Joe Kelly, Christopher Prest, Daniel Way and Jerry Duggan further developed Deadpool's insane personality. He was transformed from a minor villain into one of Marvel's most popular antiheroes.
First appearance together
Jackman had already starred as Wolverine in three X-Men films before heading his own spin-off, X-Men: The Beginning. Wolverine." Reynolds, who had been trying to persuade 20th Century Fox to make a film about Deadpool for a long time, got a role in this prequel. Reynolds' role was a brief cameo at the beginning of the film, but he calls this moment the beginning of his long friendship with Jackman.
Deadpool fans and Reynolds himself were horrified when the character appeared in the final battle of the film in an unrecognizable form, with his mouth removed and his powers altered to suit the plot. This left Reynolds with such an unpleasant aftertaste that he returned to this moment years later in the scene after the credits of the film Deadpool 2. There, his character went back in time and killed a version of himself from X-Men: The Beginning. Wolverine."
Reunion on the big screen
Reynolds urged Jackman to return to the role in Deadpool films, even after he "retired" after the 2017 film "Logan". Without the real Jackman, Reynold had to be content with just jokes about him, especially in Deadpool 2.
Jackman changed his mind in 2022, and this revived the prospects of a third Deadpool movie, which quickly turned into Deadpool and Wolverine.
"Everyone thought that Hugh's return was the result of constant persuasion on my part or Ryan's," Deadpool and Wolverine director Sean Levy told Entertainment Weekly in May 2024. "It was actually the result of Hugh Jackman's epiphany. He wanted to create a duet of Logan and Deadpool himself, which was a real gift from heaven that changed everything."
"Deadpool and Wolverine" may be a self-contained Marvel movie, but it doesn't hurt to get to know "Loki." The series starring Tom Hiddleston introduced viewers to Time Change Management (TVA). This organization controls the Marvel multiverse.
Using the TVA character Mr. Paradox (Matthew McFadyen), Deadpool sets out to save his timeline from destruction. To complete this task, Deadpool needs Wolverine's help.
Marvel and Jackman have repeatedly stated that Wolverine in this film will not be the same version that died in Logan. The events of that film will be revisited when the main characters fight Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), the immoral twin sister of X-Men leader Charles Xavier, who does not shy away from using her mental abilities to destroy enemies.
