CSIR NET Chemical Science Exam Pattern: A Complete Guide


The CSIR NET Chemical Science examination pattern intends to test the candidate's knowledge in the core areas of chemistry and his ability to solve problems. For this purpose, it becomes important to understand the examination pattern, which would, in turn, help him prepare for the exam with proper time management and attention to important topics. Let us get an overview of the examination format, including the marks distribution, types of questions, and strategies with which he can confidently approach the examination. 

  

Exam Format and Structure 

This computer-based test (CBT) is divided into three portions: Part A, Part B, and Part C. CSIR NET Chemical Science exam is divided into Part A, Part B, and Part C. 

  

  • Part A: This part has questions on General Aptitude common to all CSIR NET subjects. It also includes questions on logical reasoning, graphical analysis, numerical ability, and data interpretation. Part A carries 20 marks, and 15 questions out of 20 are to be answered. 

 

  • Part B: This is a core Chemical Science test. It is composed of conceptual questions that will be based on the understanding of topics such as organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry. Part B has 70 marks. There are 35 questions to choose from 40 provided. 

 

  • Part 😄 More demanding questions that probe understanding, analysis, and application of Chemical Science: Mostly difficult questions known to require a deeper knowledge on the part of candidates; 25 questions of 60 to be answered worth 100 marks.

The exam follows a specific marking scheme. Positive marks are given to each correct answer, but negative marking is applied in Parts A and B when the answer is incorrect. Part C has no negative marking, and candidates can attempt questions even if they are not sure. 

  

Main Preparation Tips 

  • Focus on Core Areas: Focus more on topics commonly covered in the exam, including organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry. 

  • Time to be devoted to each part with respect to marks and the complexity attached. 

  • Previous Year's papers: Get familiar with types of questions that may arise, develop speed, accuracy.
